speedo drive

Post by paso750 »

According to my dealer this is probably one of the next parts that will become rare.
Putting the front end back together again today I noticed the first time that the speedo drive has a grease nipple. So every couple of years one should give it some grease if it doesn`t turn freely like mine did.
The internal parts are probably plastic so it`s better not to use oil. (just a guess, could be brass or some other material also)

:(
Mine has gone some time ago (the brass nipple separed from the alu body and the inner gear lost :( :( :(
Still unable to replace it.
You must look at the ratio punched in the body to be sure you found an oem part: furthermore you can meet an counterclockwise gear and you might see the speedo hand go under zero level!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Test it moving the wheel with your hand before riding it!
have a nice ride, Nicola

ratio is 21/12
Why are you unable to replace it ? Ducati still has it and Stein-Dinse is selling it for around €40,-.
This one looks like it but it doesn`t mention axle diameter, width or ratio:

:,( then have to make spacer to fit it to Paso.... What is wheel size in Aprilia? That can lead to ratio, but i think, its NOT 16", as in Paso

So right ratio for 907IE...... But propably again problems with axle diameter... Anyway, spacer is not so difficult to do with lathe.

have you done it before ? However, that only makes sense if your original housing is broken, not if something inside is defect.

I was discussing with Antti before, what washers/spacers are on the left and right side of the front wheel ? I found only one. According to the parts catalogue there`s one that comes with the speedometer drive. How does that one look like? Anyone have pictures, what are the measurements ?

When I disaswsembled mine, I tried to install another one, with different inner diameter, but it was an unclocwise spinning! :(

Lat week, I just had the tab that fits into the front wheel break on my Paso. I had a spare speedometer drive unit, so I installed that one. Does anyone know if I can buy just the back plate with that tab? That piece is easily removable with a simple retaining ring that you can pull out of the unit with your fingers.

I had a similar problem on the speedo drive of my 350 Elefant a few years back (similar drive). I was able to weld the notch back on the ring, and thoroughly cleaned and greased the inner parts. I was not able to disassemble it completeley but the ring came off. I put everyting back together but also, to prevent twisting of the ring, I put some strips of neoprane tape on the ring that now is pushed flush with the gear by the wheel hub. No problems so far :)
