Ok Dave ,The black wire on my reg goes through the connector and turns into the green black wire going into the lower connector on the relay that is directly above it ,its a bit hard to see but the top wire into the relay is visible as a bluey/greeny colour, and the lower connector has two wires (both green black going into it,(one of these is connected back to the reg,I can't be bothered tracing the other one at the moment). Jon,
It seems your alternator wiring has melted in exactly the same interesting, chocolatey, way as mine. I recently cut the wires back to where they were halfway decent and crimped new connectors on. It went from this:
to this:
and a photo of the complete setup for Desmodave:
Although the setup is slightly different now because I installed a HiCap kit.
Cheers,
Mike

I corrected my caption with the picture above in the thread. That was a picture of the underseat electronics BEFORE I did the wiring upgrade. It was after I had done some wiring repairs.
The upper ground on the voltage regulator is for the relay. The lower ground on the regulator goes directly to the point on the frame where the negative battery cable connects to the frame. It is the green to black wire with the yellow butt splice connecting them in the second picture below.
Also, my stator wires are green because I replaced them from the engine case all the way to the regulator. The wires were in such bad shape that I had to replace them. The insulation was dry, discolored, and sections of the insulation was either missing or crumbled as I touched them. I also think I went with a little larger gauge wire than stock.
This is what some of the wiring looked like when I first got the bike...

Pretty typical of these bikes. Loose wires, corroded connections and burnt up insulation.
Takes a little effort but doing the work will greatly increase the performance of these often overlooked bikes.
To be fair it is typical of any 20 year old bike, including the rice burners
