congratulations ! Good to hear that it starts working.
In the long time the Paso stood did you ever squirt some oil in the cylinder and turned over the eninge by hand once in a while ?
If the cylinder wall becomes dry as the oil film becomes too thin this could create some smoke and/or defect (piston rings).

I'd turn the engine over a few times when I first got it to check for spark, then it was turned over a few times when I did the valve adjustment and replaced the timing belts. I have no idea what happened to the bike for the four or more years that I was told it wasn't running, but.......I'm really starting to think that the smoking issue was me putting too much oil in the crankcase. The sight-glass for the oil level is nearly impossible to see through, so I'll try to correct this visibility issue in the very near future.

Sorry, I forgot. I'll try to add that....soon.

the oil level glass is no problem to find as it`s the same on numerous other Ducs. (Supersport/Monster) the one like on the Paso doesn`t exist anymore the actual ones are completely in clear plastic.

The sight glass on the Paso engine is inside a huge, 36mm nut. Are you saying that the early SS and Monster bikes have a similar oil level sight-glass that is interchangeable? My '98 ST2 uses a press fit glass that fits into the side cover, and it is a smaller diameter than the one in the Paso.

I'm assuming I can remove this sight glass with a 36mm socket and that it is a standard thread? I can't find anything about removal/replacement of the sight glass. If I can find a replacement or repair this, I'd rather do that than swap it with the timing inspection sight-glass.

I think it'll be quite a hard search, as the tread for the eyeglass isn't a standard iso and i haven't been able to find a similar one in any shop (duc, car parts, industrial parts etc).
Anyway I heard to say that someone has machined them and sold on ebay

maybe I`m wrong about SS/Monster, but I`m sure it was used on other Ducs also
ducapaso: seems I have the best ducdealer that I can imagine, as he didn`t have any problem to get the part. I just went in the garage and made some pics. Ducati still sells this thing, but I don`t have any partnumber.

Desmo, the oil sight glass is definetely removable. (the whole thing, not only the glass in it)

guys I was wrong!
I drove by my Duc dealer after work today and asked him about the oil sight glass. He confirmed to me that it is indeed not available from Ducati, so everyone with a Pantah engine would suffer the same problem. The sight glass he got for me was made by a german company that made it as an aftermarket part. Also these seem to be out of production by now as it seems the plastic is not so high temperature resistant as it should be meaning that it could happen that it would become a bit milky at some time (I hope not ;)
According to him this place is switching to a machined part with a glass insert.
That`s all info I have for now as he was about to close the shop.

But I remember the seller on ebay, he`s registered under "dreamvee" and "traumvau". He sold such parts on ebay some time ago:

http://cgi.ebay.de/Ducati-Pantah-Sport- ... dZViewItem

From the auction text: "fits all Ducati Pantah, early 750/900 Sport,Supersport,851,bevel heads and Mille 1000".

He`s from DSaluparts in Germany a place I know as I had my clutch cover machined there:

http://dsaluparts.de/

I asked if he`s still selling them and will let you know as soon as I get an answer.

I appreciate the information. I want to say I've seen one of those auctions before, but my memory is cloudy.

I haven't had time to look at the bike in the last few days, but I'll try to look at it soon.

Edit - You folks that know more than one language sure make me feel like a country redneck at times.

I removed the sight-glass and took some measurements. It was surprisingly easy to remove and appears to be made of plastic. With the measurements, I think I found a replacement that will work, so I ordered one (edit - wrong thread size  ). Once it comes in, if it works out well, I'll start a new thread for future reference.....hopefully it'll work.

Edit - I found a few that will fit....but none of them are designed for anything over 212F degrees (100-degrees C), which is not high enough for the temperatures that it must withstand.

I was bored last Friday.......does it look any better, now? :D

Well, I have been far too busy with the ST2 having it's clutch try coming off the bike, the 748 just dieing, the wife's VW needing a timing belt and water pump, her R1 eating a rear brake line, and a bunch of other stuff, so the Paso hasn't been touched in several weeks. I'm hoping to get caught up on things so I can work on the Paso, again......Anyone know how easy/difficult it is to remove the starter? I need to replace the gasket to stop an oil leak, there.

Oil draining out, open left side of engine(cover off) and then You can reach last 2 of those 3 M6 screws, what holds starter in place. Someone have done it olis inside, but then need to turn safely bike to right side...

Thanks!....That's what I was reading for the newer engines. I figured the Pantah was the same way.
