if someone has the belt covers removed could you make a picture of the camshaft and driving pulleys?
I noticed that my belts hang off the camshaft pulleys by 1-2mm. About as much as the thread of the camshaft is showing. The nut of the driving pulley sits on the end of the thread. Looking at the position of the belt on the tensioner pulley it seems the driving pulleys are a bit further out than the camshaft pulleys.

This is what I have:

thank you very much! Do your belts run centered on the idler and tensioner pulley?
Mine don`t. Moving the driving pulleys inward would correct that but looking at your pictures it seems they are in the same position as mine (there`s no remaining thread visible) which would indicate that my camshaft pulleys should move outwards but then I doubt that the belts not running in the middle of idler and tensioner pulley is normal.

These are old photos, but they may help a bit. I can take new photo closeups of the idler and tensioner pulleys if you need them. Just let me know I could do it tomorrow.
I think someone more knowledgeable on this forum will be of help clarifying this issue. Good luck!

Gerhard, here's a picture of the pulley on the vertical head.

Hey G
Didn't you change your cams at some point ?

yes I did but that belt offset of course remained. I finally want to figure out what causes it.
Thanks again for the pictures. It would be nice to see some that show the pulleys and belt from the top or bottom to get a better picture of the position of the belt on the idler and tensioner pulley.

If it was there to begin with I'd have to remove the crankshaft pulley and see what the issue is. The rest all seems to look the same in terms of overriding the pulleys and rollers. How do things line up on the other side of the crank ?

Yeah , that's what I was thinkin' but I didn't want to say it. Kinda makes me think that if the cam pulleys and the idlers both appear to be in line .... its more likely that the bottom pulleys on the jack shaft are the ones out of line.

crankshaft pulley?

On my crankshaft there`s the alternator on one side and the clutch on the other
How do things line up on the other side of the crank ?
The original shims for the driving pulleys are 0.2 or 0.5mm. I doubt it would make a noticable difference swapping one with the other as the belts are hanging 1-2mm off.
I`ve received the pulley tool a few days ago (bought this one as it`s the cheapest I could find
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Laser-5341-Ca ... 534800956?). Now I just need to find the motivation to pull the belts off again. It`s currently 0-5°C and not too much warmer in the garage.

I have a 906 crankcase split I'll take a look maybe give me some idea of what to look for
crankshaft pulley?

On my crankshaft there`s the alternator on one side and the clutch on the other

yeah yeah I get it
update: 906 appears to be a little different, timing shaft protrudes further past the timing belt drive gears and their nut
Still curious how the gears on the other end line up

assuming they line up good it has to be the thrust washers, or some other oddball issue like cylinder and head alignment. Don't remember if you bored or replaced the cylinders ?
Adjustible cam belt pulleys (changed all other pulleys from square to round teeth)
How did they line up before you changed them ?
It does appear the timing shaft is captured in the case halves on the drive side, did you tighten that end first ?
If so I guess your only viable option is loose the thrust washers you have installed for some much thinner ones to get the alignment kosher
Hey I just noticed the timing gears don't line up very well on this spare case half

Now that`s an interesting picture
I don`t remember how the pulleys aligned with the old belts and pulleys. Also I let a shop do the whole engine rebuild so there`s not much I can say about it.

I`ve found some topics on other Duc forums about that. At least that lines up on my engine.
