You might be thinking of Jimmy Adamo here in the US - died in a crash caused by a shattered *carbon* rotor, back when the technology was rather new.

It's not that hard. At it's simplest:
buy a set of 900 SS intake manifolds off of ebay
buy a Mikuni vacuum fuel pump off of ebay
buy a Keihin FCR carb kit for 900SS (includes cables, twist grip, etc.)
buy some pod air filters
Rip out everything under the tank, including the fuel pump, and put the new stuff in. Plumb the vacuum fuel pump off of one of the vacuum ports, pulling fuel from the tank and pushing via tees past the carbs and back up into the tank as in the original fuel loop. Bingo, you have more space under the tank, and a better running system for a day's work and $1,250.00 or so. sell the old parts and you're out less than ~1,000.00.
More than I want to spend, but easily doable with basic tools and skills.

my motto is...if it aint broken dont fix it...I dont know much about superbikes, but didnt ducati won a few world championship titles on their 888 in the early 90s...surely they must of had a p7 or p8 FI system and not carbs! I might be wrong and if so someone correct me, but if that is the case...I rest my case

I agree. The only reason I'd change the EFI system is to learn. Other than a cold start hiccup or ten it's fine by me.

I dont know much about superbikes, but didnt ducati won a few world championship titles on their 888 in the early 90s
The first injected racing Ducati,I believe was the 4 valve 851 in 1985

I it was a little later, in january 1986 Ducati started testing and the first appeareance was in Septemper 1986 at the "Bol D'or 24" with a 748cc LC 4V Fuel injected with a Marelli EFI.
