Thinking of making a streetfighter out of my Paso

Post by pasoist »

Hi everyone,

Been reading this forum for about a year now, but not been a member since now. I bought a ´88 PASO 750 last year, rode it a few months and now is the time to some maintenance work, maybe even a complete restoration. My Paso has been converted to a two carburetor version by some previous owner/dealer. The fuel pump has been also removed, so the fuel runs from the tank to the carbs by gravity only. Works nice anywho...

My rear shock (ohlins) needs a complete maintenance, and since I have to put the Paso to the garage for some time anyway, I have been thinking of doing some bigger renovation work.

Last night an idea struck my head... What about stripping off the fairings? Maybe if I switch the headlight to a more streetfighter/monster styled one? I even drew up some schetches that look pretty allright.

The conversion could be done in a manner that is totally reversible and I´m not going to lose the original parts, But... I´m still thinking if the community of other Paso owner consider me crazy? So how about it, would it be OK to convert a Paso into something else?

yes, well actually what I´m looking for is somewhere in the midlle of a Paso, a Monster and a Streetfighter.

I´ll try to post a few pictures of my schetches here.

Anyways my idea is to make the conversion fully restorable to original condition. So I wont be violating the original fairings etc. but making new ones from fibreglass and/or plastic.

OK, here goes:

ahhh crap... seems the pictures are a bit wide...

I´ll try to edit them smaller when I have time.

BTW the headlight I´m thinking of is this:

It's been done before with a Paso and there are pictures scattered throughout the forum of bikes that were completed and efforts that were abandoned. Personally, I don't think the Paso looks good as a naked streetfighter. It just isn't designed correctly for such an endeavor.

He's gunna find out , and anyhow I like the drawings , and some of them bikes dont look to bad. I suppose if you somehow wind up with a paso with either badly damaged or non existant fairings your options are a bit limited

Hmmm,

I think I agree with McTool. The drawing looks kinda interesting.

The main things I think usually goes wrong with the naked Paso projects is failing to streamline the design around the front tank of the tank (where the fairing would normally join is a sharp, triangle shape) and getting the headlight and dash wrong.

But that drawing doesn't look so bad, with what looks like a modern monster headlight and a new mini fairing joining the front seam at the tank.

I would think you would want modern tyres and proportions for a streefighter look so 17inch wheels would be on the list too right!

Actually, the picture from nojapan looks OK too.....

cheers,

It's really hard to get a really nice streetfighter from a Paso.
As you have just seen, most of the attempts are really ugly.
I wish you manage to do a better work, even if I (like Antti) think a Paso is a Paso.

If you would like to have a streetfighter, it will be easier and cheaper start from another bike.

Howewer, I like very much you mean to do it so that it will be totally reversible.

IMHO, the two big issue with making a streetfighter from a Paso are the tank and the faring stay. The first bike that comes to mind is the old mid 80's Interceptors. They looked just fine. But the fairing stay and the tank suited the square box frame structure of the bike

Just spent last night at the garage...

As I mentioned earlier I needed to remove the rear shock and take to the shop for a complete maintenance. So that´s what I did yesterday. I also took off all the fairings and thought thoroughly about this whole streetfighter/monster-conversion thing...

The main reason why I´m even considering about doing this conversion is the fact that you cannot find the right size tyres for the Paso in 16". Also in order to convert to 17" rims you need to mutilate the fairings (or so I´m told). So if I convert to 17" and make totally new (more SF-style) fairings from plastic and fibreglass I am able to store all the original parts (and of course restore them fully with new paint job etc.) in perfect condition.

I´m definately not stupid enough to make changes to the Paso that I cannot reverse later. If I could get the right kind of tires I probably wouldn´t even be considering this option but since the situation is this I like to keep an open mind about it.

Anyhow about the fairings....

Made some planning last night and I think the fairings in front of the tank could be replaced by a construction similar to what´s on the KTM duke or a Kawasaki ER-6n, in other words something between a supermoto-style and a naked streetfighter. Possibly the oil radiators could be attached to this "fairing", not sure yet but anyway I think this is the way I´ll be heading...

Anyway all the modifications will be taking place next winter, right now I´m only going to get the rear-shock in order and the Paso back on the road.

I guess you was told wrong.
If I well remember, you only need to raise the front mudguard.
