Very poor quality of steel. I don't think this could be dangerous, but it's likely to be some kind of crap or hole, hidden by painting. Your frame has ridden for 28 years since now with no matter. Repairing the holes should be enough.

You can try to tension harder the spring and push the hydraulic lifter. More have a look to the chain tensioner. it can be twisted upward or downward. Here's a pic from mine, setted to downward. As you can see, it helps me to have some space more for my 17" rims http://i168.photobucket.com/album...

It might be lowered by some mechanic, cutting the rear spring.

Re: Observations and a question (or three)
Ciao Nicola, Since I will use a Mikuni mechanical fuel pump, would you recommend me to use this flow back system or just a single hose from fuel tap to pump and again a single hose from pump to Weber? Frank Ciao Frenk! The flow back hose into tank is surely better as the sistem shown in the s...

Re: Observations and a question (or three)
The one shown in the manual is the first solution, the one you have is the second used for all 750 and 906. Very easier to manage fuel flux and avoid vapour lock.
